The Jagged Frontier: Why AI can Atrophy Your Critical Thinking

A landmark Harvard/BCG study reveals that while AI boosts creativity, it causes high-performers to drop by 19% on problem-solving tasks. The danger lies in the "Jagged Frontier"—and the tendency for humans to outsource their judgment to a machine that is confidently wrong.


Introduction

The narrative around generative AI is centred around it being an engine for productivity that functions as a super-intelligent intern, raising the floor for low performers and raising the ceiling for high performers.

However, a 2023 study by Harvard Business School, Wharton and BCG reveals a more nuanced reality. While AI has largely boosted performance in the domain of creative tasks, it caused high-performing consultants to perform 19% worse on problem-solving tasks compared to those working without the use of AI. This is largely a human problem, as those consultants making regular use of AI tools risk falling asleep at the wheel.

The Jagged Frontier

At the core of this problem is that our mental models of AI difficulty are fundamentally flawed. It is assumed that if AI tools can pass the Bar Exam or write a sonnet – rather complicated tasks – it can certainly do simpler tasks such as logical deduction.

Yet researchers have found that AI capabilities cannot be visualised as a smooth curve, but rather as a jagged frontier. Essentially, while AI is excellent at some incredibly complex tasks, it can hallucinate and fail on basic ones.

However, the line separating where AI excels and where it fails is invisible. Hence, users find themselves trusting AI tools on the wrong tasks. For example, in the experiment, consultants blindly accepted AI’s plausible but incorrect output for nuanced business problems.

The Cyborg Trap

The study identified two types of AI users: Centaurs and Cyborgs.

“Cyborgs” attempted to intertwine their workflow completely with the AI, asking it to do everything. In turn, this led to cognitive atrophy. AI excels at generating text that is fluid and confident. Consequently, the human brain no longer critiques the output, and the user becomes a passive editor rather than an active thinker.

Nevertheless, when the task was inside the AI’s frontier, like brainstorming product ideas, the cyborgs outperformed others by 40%. Although in tasks that required subtle judgement, or where AI had not entirely adapted yet, they were faster but often confidently wrong.

The solution lies in being a “Centaur”. In the context of AI, this means a clear division of labour. Such a user looks at a given task and decides whether it is more fit for a human or an AI. The study revealed that centaurs were the most efficient, as they spent time doing the work themselves and only used AI for specific sub-tasks rather than attempting to collaborate with AI on every sentence, minimising mistakes.

Conclusion

Rather than treating AI as a replacement for critical thinking, users ought to think of it as a test of it. Treating AI as an oracle risks dragging your performance down to the average of the internet. High performance requires maintaining the friction of human doubt – at least for now.
